Affectionately known as the Victorian Port City, Manistee came of age
in the 1800's as a lumber boomtown that, in the Victorian era, had more
millionaires per capita than anywhere else in the United States. The
flourishing economy produced great wealth and a high standard of
living, which is manifested in elegant mansions, an opera-house style
theatre, and ornate public buildings and churches designed by
nationally known architects. To this day, Manistee continues to be one
of the busiest shipping and recreational ports on Lake Michigan. A
memorable experience unique to Manistee is watching 700-foot Great
Lakes freighters delicately navigate the narrow Manistee River Channel,
passing through two open drawbridges along the way. During summer
months, modern Great Lakes Cruise ships frequently visit the Victorian
Port City, much like they did a century ago. Maritime history buffs
will enjoy visiting the S.S. City of Milwaukee, a historic car ferry
ship and museum that's berthed on Manistee Lake.

The Manistee County Historical Museum operates two museums that
showcase the history of the area. Visit the main museum located in the
Lyman Building at 425 River Street or the Water Works Museum on First
Street.

The Water Works Museum is one of
two museum facilities operated by the Manistee County Historical
Museum.

Manistee's Victorian heritage is celebrated on a regular basis.
