Arts and culture abound in Downtown Manistee. The historic Ramsdell Theatre has been a showplace for the arts since it's opening in 1903. Manistee's most famous actor, James Earl Jones, began his career on the Ramsdell's stage. Free tours of this magnificently restored building are available. The Manistee Civic Players present six productions per year at the Ramsdell and the Manistee Art Institute regularly displays exhibits in the Ramsdell's T. Walter Hardy Exhibit Hall. The Ramsdell also hosts many public and private functions throughout the year for the local community and is available for wedding receptions. The Manistee Public Library (A Carnegie Library) is welcoming to families, with its large children's area and programs for visitors of all ages. May through September, shop the local Farmer's Market every Saturday, located in the corner lot at Washington Street and Memorial Drive. The Riverwalk band shell on the north side of the channel is home to the Manistee Jaycees' free Thursday Night "Roots on the River" Concert series from June through August.
